Indian Beach, Ecola State Park, Oregon
Indian Beach, located within Ecola State Park near Cannon Beach on the northern Oregon Coast, is one of the most iconic and photogenic beaches in the state—especially at sunset. Tucked between forested headlands and basalt cliffs, this crescent-shaped beach faces west, making it an exceptional place to watch the sun dip into the Pacific Ocean.
As sunset approaches, Indian Beach transforms with warm golden light reflecting off wet sand, rocky outcrops, and the dramatic headlands that frame the shoreline. On clear evenings, the sky often fills with vivid shades of orange, pink, and purple, creating stunning conditions for sunset photography. Offshore rocks and tide pools add texture and depth to sunset views, while passing seabirds and distant waves enhance the peaceful coastal atmosphere.
Indian Beach is also popular with surfers, and watching silhouetted surfers glide across the water against a glowing sunset is a unique and memorable sight. At low tide, visitors can explore tide pools along the northern end of the beach before settling in to enjoy the evening light. The surrounding old-growth forest and nearby hiking trails make it easy to combine a sunset visit with a walk through Ecola State Park’s scenic landscape.
Whether you’re a photographer, nature lover, or simply looking for one of the best sunset spots on the Oregon Coast, Indian Beach offers a dramatic and unforgettable setting as day turns to night.
